Do you think we as mothers should dress our kids to impress? Are we going too far when it comes to fashion for our tots or are we just keeping up with the Gymborees? After a trip to the mall last week with my 2 year old I realized that fashion trends change not only for us moms but our kids. I was on a mad hunt for a plain brown pair of Maryjanes. Nothing too fancy just a pair or shoes for a day out or to wear to church. I started my search at the best shoes spot I thought, Stride Rite. After looking a 8 pairs of brown, gold, taupe, pink and brown, patent leather, tennis shoe inspired mary janes, I threw up my hands in a cry for help. I didn't know what I was looking for trendy or comfort. Mind you my daughter has only uttered a few words so getting her input was either a big smile in delight or a swift kicking off of a shoe. Well I think she enjoys shoes and shoe shopping. She smiled in delight to each pair placed on her small "Flinstone Feet" as we say...tall, fat and wide baby feet. She owns shoes from Cole Haan to Payless. So which is the best fit for those cute feet?
After doing some research and asking moms, the answer was not as simple as I thought. Some moms said look for a good long lasting shoe, while others say if the kids keeps them on the feet be happy. When your child is starting out on those first monumentous first steps, you want something that gives and allows the feet to feel the ground beneath them. The longer they are allowed to walk without shoes on the better. This allows for the feet to develop naturally. However we know as moms they will want to start the exploreing phases so shoes will be necessary when they want to venture to the great outdoors. Be sure to get your child's feet measured by a pro like someone at Stride Rite. Look for shoes that allow for flexibility, no skid bottoms, and lightweight materials. So to answer the question Prada versus Pedipied, think about your check book, and the amount of money you will eventually spend in the future of clothing your child. I say go for what fits your budget. I am sure that your small toddler will care less about the name brand on their shoes. Besides that's what grandmas are for. Go for comfort, and leave the style sense for those later years....it will be here sooner than you think!
